When was the last time you read a Ukrainian book? You may have seen a newer one, perhaps an autobiography, or a book about the history of Ukraine, but have you encountered a translated Ukrainian classic anywhere? Perhaps Ukrainian literature doesn't interest you, but one must admit its lack is a little strange. The unfortunate reason is that only a handful of Ukrainian books have ever been translated, even into English, the most spoken language in the world. The reason why is complicated, but we decided to change this.
When doing the research for this project, a surprising revelation was just how many quality books there are in classic Ukrainian literature, and how few of them are translated. Ranging in topics from historical to dramatic, comedic and everything in between. The pieces include poetry, prose and plays. These works tell stories of peasants and nobles, warriors and farmers, intellectuals and thugs. Their conflicts make one think and consider other points of views. In short, Ukrainian literature is just like all literature - vibrant, rich, and multifaceted. Entire books can be written about the history of Ukrainian literature, the epics of the Kievan Rus, the poems of Taras Shevchenko and Lesya Ukrainka, the multitude of novels from centuries past, the diverse pieces of modernist literature in the 20th century and all the way up to today. As you can probably tell, I could spend a long time extolling the virtues of Ukrainian literature.
The main goal of this project is to translate as many quality historical novels, novellas and poems of Ukrainian literature into English. Currently we are finalising the release of our first book, a feminist novella from around 1900, written by Olha Kobylianska. In the near future, the selection will be increased, and the plan is to translate books from a multitude of genres, and authors. There certainly is no lack of literary works waiting to be translated, in addition to the fact that after English the plan is to translate the books into other languages as well.
